About Durham

Klute is said to be the ‘Worst Nightclub in Europe’. FHM named it the runner-up some years ago, but the club that took the first place has since burned down.

Eating Out

There are plenty of tasty places to grab a meal in Durham, here are some of our tips…

  • Dynasty Chinese Buffet. All you can eat! Perfect for livers out, come and stuff yourselves on a Monday and don’t eat again until Friday… Probably best to avoid some of the seafood though.
  • The Cellar Door. A cosy Italian restaurant hidden underneath Jack Wills in the town centre. At weekends it doubles up as a small club featuring some of the best alternative music in Durham.
  • Walkergate Complex. This modern entertainment complex not only boasts Durham’s largest club, Loveshack, but also a host of popular restaurant chains including Nandos, Lloyd’s, Slug and Lettuce, Fat Buddha and Chiquitos.
  • Spag’s. This student friendly Italian is a favourite, and located just above is Fabios bar – perfect for a few cheeky cocktails afterwards!

Nights Out

Durham is often accused of being pretty limited when it comes to nights out. NOT TRUE! You just need to know where to look…

  • Cheese. If you want good-and-honest cheese then the place for you is Klute. A night at Klute will feature “Quaddy Voddys”, Spice Girls, Queen and never ends well…
  • Mainstream. Studio on North Road and Loveshack in the Walkergate Complex offer your mainstream club nights most of the week.
  • Indie. When it comes to Indie music in Durham ‘Revolver’ at the DSU is the biggest night of the week. Held every Saturday with three rooms of music to choose from this is a big Mildert favourite. For those a little more choosy about their Indie there’s also the smaller ‘Grammar’ held at Fishtank on a Tuesday.
  • Dance. The DSU hosts “Planet of Sound” (affectionately ‘Planet’ or ‘Hound’) every Friday, its the biggest club night in Durham and often sells out at peak times of year. ‘Gold’ is Durham’s biggest Rave night and is held a few times a term in Loft.
  • Live Music. Live music tends to be hidden all around Durham, Fishtank and Cellar Door frequently host small bands, as do many colleges including our own Jam Night Committee. Whilst bigger bands tend not to play in Durham its not far on the train to Newcastle Academy, a popular stop on any UK tour.
  • R ‘n’ B. Look out for ‘Red Corner’ events held every few weeks at the DSU.
  • Drum ‘n’ Bass. Subotica club nights operate out of a number of venues including Loveshack & Fishtank and often feature some of the best Electro, Drum ‘n’ Bass and Dubstep acts around including in the past the likes of Benga, Pendulum, Hot Chip and Dans le Sac.

Other Colleges

Now, whilst it is generally accepted that our college is superior to any other, there are other colleges out there with some redeeming features of their own. Click on the colleges to discover some objective facts about them…

Durham Students Union

Politically, the DSU represents Durham students as a whole when negotiating with the university administration peeps over issues such as residence charges. The DSU also participates in nationwide campaigns- the opposition to an increase in variable tuition fees, being an example.

JCR Senior DSU Rep Patrick McConnell

As well as holding its own ents nights such as Revolver and Planet of Sound the Student Union host University-wide organisations and societies offering a whole new level of involvement and a great range of opportunities from Sky Diving to Appreciation Groups, Big Bands, Palatinate (Durham’s student newspaper) and more…
